What's it like to be an Accountant?
Accountants help determine if an organisation or individual is financially healthy by comparing income and expenditure. Whether they are working for the government or a corporation, Accountants document all transactions and perform financial calculations. They prepare financial statements, determine financial health and ability to generate income and pay loans, and, if working for a company, disseminate annual reports among the investors.
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring daily financial transactions.
- Overseeing accounting procedures like billing and invoicing.
- Processing monthly salaries for employees.
- Ensuring that tax processes and other financial activities follow government regulations.
- Preparing and examining data before inputting it in general ledger accounts.
- Recognising and settling inconsistencies in financial records.
- Verifying that an organisation’s expenses stay within budget.
- Working with banks, public auditors and other external employees to keep financial records in order.
There are many specialised roles in accounting including Tax Accountants, Public Accountants, Management Accountants, and Auditors. By managing finances including tax returns and budgets, effective Accountants develop good business sense. With their deep knowledge of historical financial data, they can provide input on how businesses can maximise profits.
How to become an Accountant
Because of the specialised skills needed in accounting jobs, candidates must have high professional competencies and a solid academic background.
- Complete a bachelor degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. This will arm you with important knowledge on accounting principles, business communications and law. If you are eventually aiming for senior roles such as a Chartered Accountant, consider completing a Master of Accounting. Alternatively, consider completing a Master of Business Administration if you’re interested in becoming a Corporate Accountant.
- To practise as an Accountant in Malaysia, you have the option of either finishing an accounting-related degree or being a full member of a professional accountancy body such as the Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
- Obtain 3 years of practical work experience.
- Become a Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) member. Depending on your specialisation, you may need to pass the MIA Qualifying Exam before practising.
- Apply for accounting roles. As an Accountant, you can work in a variety of businesses like banks, insurance firms, and management consultancies.
- After years of experience, you can grow your career in the corporate field in roles such as Senior Accountant, Corporate Controller, and ultimately, as a Chief Financial Officer.
