What's it like to be an Assistant Manager?
Assistant Managers help a Manager to supervise daily operations and carry out workflow processes. Assistant Managers work in a wide range of industries such as retail, food service and in an office. Because of this, their responsibilities may vary. Those in retail may handle customer complaints and arrange inventory, while office-based Assistant Managers usually handle staff relations. Generally, Assistant Managers help boost productivity by implementing workflow processes and changes. They handle and resolve client or customer queries and complaints as they arise. They typically work with different people from across a business.
Tasks and duties
- Ensuring tasks are effectively distributed among the team.
- Developing systems and procedures for operational efficiency while monitoring workforce adherence to organisational guidelines.
- Assisting the Manager in interviewing and recruiting new staff.
- Developing good relationships with clients and employees.
- Drafting strategies to improve workflows and achieve business goals.
- Managing personnel reports and databases.
How to become an Assistant Manager
- Build a few years of experience in your specific field. This could be in a Sales Representative, Account Executive or Administrative Assistant role. Assistant Managers can often be promoted from a more junior role within a company.
- Consider completing a qualification in business. A degree or diploma course in business administration or a related field equips you with skills and knowledge in general business principles and operations, which can be applied across industries.
- Consider completing further study to broaden your career opportunities. Assistant Managers may progress to being General Managers. Completion of a masters degree and additional certifications may be beneficial.
