What's it like to be a Hairdresser?
Also called Hair Stylists or Beauticians, Hairdressers may be freelancers or employed in establishments that offer haircare services such as salons, spas, and hotels. They consult with clients to determine their needs, advise them on hair style and treatment options, and deliver end results in line with client’s preferences. To do this, Hairdressers should have extensive knowledge on their establishment’s services and products, and styling techniques including current trends.
Tasks and duties
- Greeting customers and ensuring their comfort.
- Identifying and meeting clients’ specifications on their preferred hair styles.
- Recommending cuts, styles, colours, treatments, and other hair procedures to customers.
- Shampooing and conditioning clients’ hair.
- Making sure work stations are tidy and that tools are sanitised during their shifts.
- Monitoring stock of tools and products.
- Persuading customers to buy the salon’s hair products.
- Keeping abreast of hair styling and hair product trends.
When handling a line of waiting customers, Hairdressers should know how to manage their time and remain calm under pressure. They also spend a lot of time on their feet. To ensure customer safety, Hairdressers must keep their work station clean, know how to handle hair chemicals, and sterilise styling tools such as scissors and curling irons before using. They should also have good manual dexterity and hand-and-eye coordination to manipulate such tools.
How to become a Hairdresser
Hairdressers use their creativity and problem-solving skills to come up with results that satisfy customers. To achieve this goal, they need hands-on training and the willingness to try new things.
- Hairdressers are not required to finish a specific educational level before working. However, education options include hairdressing courses that range in duration from weeks to months. These courses are typically professional certifications, and teach hairdressing basics such as cutting, colouring, and product knowledge. Longer courses may teach advanced knowledge like hair science and salon management.
- Consider being a member of the Malaysian Hairdressing Association (MHA). This national-level organisation seeks to protect hairdressers’ rights and develop the industry. MHA offers career and educational opportunities for Malaysian Hairdressers.
- If you want to gain practical experience, get an entry-level role like Junior Hairdresser. Here, you will be welcoming clients, and shampooing and conditioning their hair. After a few years, you may advance to Senior Hairdresser.
