What's it like to be a Barber?
Barbers offer hair care services such as shaving, cutting, and styling to a predominantly male clientele. They typically work in barber shops and salons, but may also be employed in bigger establishments like hotels, spas, and resorts. Apart from basic hair services, they may also provide scalp treatments, hair colouring, and beard trimming services.
Tasks and duties
- Cutting, trimming, and tapering hair using scissors, clippers, comb and hair dryer.
- Shaping, trimming, and shaving beards and other types of facial hair.
- Contouring hair on temples and neck with the use of a razor.
- Giving scalp, face, and neck massages.
- Keeping the work area neat and tidy.
- Disinfecting and organising equipment after use.
- Giving feedback to superiors to improve service quality.
Barbers are required to be on their feet for long stretches of time as they attend to customers. They work with tools such as scissors, clippers, and razors, and in some instances, harsh chemicals for hair treatments.
How to become a Barber
You can work as a Barber without formal qualifications. However, completion of high school and a relevant course is preferred by many employers.
- 1.Finish secondary education. Many employers prefer candidates to have completed high school.
- 2.Complete a barber training programme. These programmes may be offered by barber shops themselves. A full course may take 4 weeks to complete, while workshops on specialised skills like wet shaving, clipper and fading techniques range from 1 to 5 days.
- 3.Gain experience. When starting out, you may be required to assist Barbers, and help in administrative duties before you can work directly with customers.
