What's it like to be a Surveyor?
Surveyors estimate property boundaries, conduct measurement and evaluation of sites, and create land survey reports for private or public property. They are expected to have an aptitude for mathematics and estimation. They must be analytical, have a keen eye for detail, and have the ability to communicate well. Surveyors must also be able to analyse complex data and measurements, and record results accurately. Surveyors are often in the field — thus, they should also be able to plan ahead and exercise diligence in terms of organising and arranging documents.
Tasks and duties
- Calculating site measurements and evaluating property boundaries.
- Recording survey results as well as descriptions of property boundaries.
- Ensuring calculations are accurate.
- Organising and researching documents such as survey records and land titles relating to site boundaries.
How to become a Surveyor
Becoming a Surveyor entails the right education, experience, and registration.
- Take up a bachelor degree in geomatic and land surveying or any university programme accredited by the Land Surveyors Board Malaysia (LJT). The LJT is in charge of regulating the land surveying practice in Malaysia.
- After graduating from your university programme, you will have to apply as an articled pupil with the LJT and pay a fee. An articled period lasts for a minimum of two years.
- Once you have finished your articles and training under a licensed Land Surveyor, you may apply for the three-part examination.
- After you have passed the examination, you can now apply for your licence as a Land Surveyor. Submit your form to the board secretary along with a statutory declaration and fee.
