What's it like to be a Quantity Surveyor?
Quantity Surveyors manage contracts and costs of a construction project, from beginning to completion. They are expected to have an aptitude for mathematics, estimation, and problem-solving. They are very hands-on in the construction process and are in charge of running a cost analysis on repair work, issuing payments to contractors, and distributing work among the construction team.
Tasks and duties
- Projecting cost estimates on various materials needed for a project.
- Preparing contracts, legal tender documents, invoices, and other documentation.
- Hiring or procuring subcontractors based on the presented budget to the client.
- Liaising with site managers, site engineers, and other necessary people to ensure the project follows to the timeline.
- Issuing payments to contractors and other employees.
They also need to plan site visits and research for future projects — hence, it is important that Quantity Surveyors are detail-oriented and know how to plan ahead.
How to become a Quantity Surveyor
Becoming a Quantity Surveyor entails the right education, recognition, and experience.
- Take up a bachelor degree in quantity surveying (QS) or any university programme accredited by the Board of Quantity Surveying Malaysia (BQSM), the sole accrediting body of QS programmes in the country.
- Once you have graduated from your university programme, you will need to take up the Assessment of Professional Competence under the BQSM. There are two levels of registration: the Professional Quantity Surveyor and the Consultant Quantity Surveyor.
- You must also register as a provisional member with the BQSM and the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) as you continue the path of becoming a Qualified Quantity Surveyor.
- You may receive the prefix title, ‘Sr.’ once you have completed and passed all exams and interviews.
