What's it like to be a Statistician?
Statisticians find patterns and insights in data to explain the reasons behind outcomes, then draw recommendations to increase progress in a company’s agenda. Statisticians are needed in a wide variety of industries, such as manufacturing, health, social media, and politics.
Tasks and duties
- Collecting data through surveys, polls, questionnaires and analytics programs.

- Presenting reports to explain data analysis to stakeholders.
- Creating systems for optimised data collection and analysis.
How to become a Statistician
A bachelor degree is required for most entry-level statistician jobs, while higher jobs require a masters degree. The job requires above-average maths skills, problem-solving and presentation skills.
- Obtain a bachelor degree in statistics, actuarial science, economics, or other related fields.
- Work an internship at a recognised company, or participate as a Statistician in school and volunteer organisations.
- Gain at least two years of experience as an entry-level Statistician.
- Consider taking a master degree in statistics for higher positions, such as Senior Statistician, Statistics Manager, or starting your own business as a Statistics Consultant.
