What's it like to be a Data Scientist?
Data Scientists gather, process and interpret data to discover insights for different business applications. They pore over unstructured data and organise it into a more understandable form by using algorithms. They then use predictive analysis and statistical modelling to extract usable information. Data Scientists can also create algorithms to improve the way data is processed and understood.
Tasks and duties
- Collecting usable information from large data sets.
- Cleaning missing or irrelevant data for processing.
- Looking for trends and opportunities based on data processed.
- Interpreting insights and communicating predictions using visual reports.
- Recommending action plans based on data provided.
How to become a Data Scientist
Becoming a Data Scientist requires a strong understanding of maths and statistics that can be learned by studying a degree. Some employers prefer candidates who have programming skills.
- Complete a degree in maths, statistics or computer science. Studying these courses provides strong foundation skills to be able to work with large data sets and interpret them.
- Study a programming language. With large data sets requiring software to handle processing, an understanding of coding in popular programming languages such as Java, Python and SQL is beneficial.
- Progress your career as a Data Scientist through industry certifications or by studying a masters degree, such as a Master of Business Administration.
