The role of a CFO resembles the duties of a treasurer or controller because they regulate, manage, and control the finances and accounting of a company. They also ensure that financial reports are accurate and up to date.
Tasks and duties
- Supervising the overall financial operations of a company.
- Providing leadership and focus to accounting and finance departments.
- Handling the company's purchasing, pricing, investments, debt, tax and accounts payable/receivable.
- Ensuring that the company operates effectively and complies with laws and internal policies.
- Preparing financial statements, business activity reports and annual budgets.
- Developing policies, guidelines and procedures that will help the accounting of a company operate smoothly.
- Examining the company's financial strengths and weaknesses and offering solutions and corrective measures whenever necessary.
How to become a Chief Financial Officer
- Complete a bachelor degree in finance, economics, business administration, management, public administration or a related field.
- Consider advancing your skills and knowledge with a masters degree, such as a masters in accounting, finance or business administration.
- In most cases, you will have to gain extensive corporate experience related to controller or treasury roles.
- Enhance your credentials and employability by becoming a Certified Public Accountant.
