What's it like to be a Carpenter?
Carpentry features various specialisations that can range from installing posts and beam framing, to building cabinets and other specialty items. Generally, Carpenters are responsible for interpreting blueprints or following their supervisor’s instructions. Carpenters work in domestic and commercial environments, on construction sites, factories and workshops.
Tasks and duties
- Installing foundations, walls, roofing frames, rafters and partitions using materials such as wood, steel, metal, concrete and composite materials.
- Setting up scaffolding and ladders for manual work above ground level.
- Preparing timber elements to be used for structures or fittings.
- Calculating the material costs of hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, bench tools and safety equipment whenever replacements are necessary.
- Repairing cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors and other building fixtures.
- Coordinating with clients, suppliers and contractors.
- Removing defective parts or sections of structures.
How to become a Carpenter
To pursue a career in carpentry, a secondary school certificate or the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) is often required. You can learn from a variety of experiences, from small domestic jobs to working on construction sites. Getting an apprenticeship is an excellent way to gain experience.
- Obtain the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) before applying for an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship programs usually last for about three to four years. During this time, you will learn a basic understanding about the nature of the work, safety, freehand sketching, mathematics and a number of carpentry techniques. After completing the apprenticeship, you can either obtain a certification, enroll in trade school, or pursue other vocational schooling.
- If you wish to obtain a certification, you need to complete a Certificate III in Carpentry and Joinery. You will also be required to undergo training with a Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
- Employment opportunities are available in construction companies or on commercial and residential properties. You can also become a sole-proprietor.
