What's it like to be an Assistant Accountant?
Assistant Accountants provide support for Accountants and finance teams by performing daily secretarial, bookkeeping, and accounting responsibilities for an organisation. Assistant Accountants are part of a wider accounting team, and support the Accountant in ensuring an organisation’s financial health. They input and manage data, calculate daily figures included in business records and assemble financial data and reports. Assistant Accountants can work across all industries and often spend most of their time in front of the computer using accounting software and applications.
Tasks and duties
- Recording daily transactions in ledgers.
- Issuing financial records such as purchase orders, invoices, and billing statements.
- Auditing and rectifying account inconsistencies.
- Monitoring banking activities made through the organisation’s account.
- Competing daily and annual financial reports.
- Ensuring that expenditures stay within budget.
- Arranging internal and external financial checks.
How to become an Assistant Accountant
To work as an Assistant Accountant you need to complete a relevant qualification. Some companies may prefer applicants with experience, which may be gained through internship.
- Finish a bachelor’s degree. A diploma course in accountancy, which typically takes 2 years to complete, may cover accounting basics. However, some hirers may prefer candidates with a degree in accounting.
- Become a member of a professional accountancy body such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) or Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). You can apply to be a member of these bodies instead of finishing a bachelor degree. However, all Accountants in Malaysia are required to be a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA), which requires an accounting degree and at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
- Consider completing further study to become an Accountant. A masters degree in accounting or business administration will help you qualify for senior corporate roles.
