What's it like to be a Welder?
Welders repair metal products by heating them with their welding tools. They cut and join metals and other materials in facilities or construction sites. Welders operate appropriate equipment to put together mechanical structures or parts with a great deal of precision. A Welder’s job is important as it provides the foundation for strong infrastructure.
Tasks and duties
- Reading blueprints and drawings to plan layout and procedures.
- Determining the appropriate welding equipment or method based on requirements.
- Setting up components for welding according to specifications.
- Operating angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded.
- Aligning components using calipers, rulers and clamp pieces.
- Welding components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions.
- Repairing machinery and other components by welding pieces and filling gaps.
- Testing and inspecting welded surfaces and structures to discover flaws.
- Maintaining the quality of equipment for safety.
- Using electrical or manual tools.
Welders must be competent using potentially dangerous equipment, following all safety precautions. Welders also need to have a steady hand and great attention to detail. Knowledge of different kinds of metals and their properties is essential to the job.
How to become a Welder
The path to becoming a Welder varies. However, due to employer preferences and requirements, completing a post-secondary welding program and gaining industry certification may be beneficial.
- Complete high school with Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and on-the-job training. These are usually required in terms of welding education.
- Pursue post-secondary welding training. This welding training focuses on instruction in welding and cutting processes, metallurgy and welding safety practices. The training usually takes seven months to two years.
- Earn a welding certification from a welding school, an employer, or industry organisation. This certification varies with the granting organisation, and usually involves a test or inspection.
