What's it like to be a User Experience Designer?
User Experience (UX) Designers help develop products and services by creating meaningful experiences for people. They advocate for the needs of users by considering the following: the way, why, and how people use products and services. User Experience Designers commonly work in fields relating to IT and marketing, but they can work in other industries that offer products and services.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting user research and testing.
- Drafting wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and user flows based on concepts and the needs of users.
- Collaborating with different teams such as product, design and IT to create meaningful and friendly user journeys and experiences.
- Communicating the rationale behind designs to build support and understanding of the user journey with internal and external stakeholders.
How to become a User Experience Designer
User Experience Designers come from different backgrounds. Some complete degrees in IT, specialising in software development while some have marketing, psychology, design or business degrees.
Complete a degree related to design, software development, psychology, marketing or a related field.
Look for internships or entry-level opportunities in experience design. Use this time to apply important UX basics such as UX design principles, and the foundational concepts of usability.
Build a portfolio of your work. When you apply for roles, you may be asked to show this so employers can browse examples of your work.
