What's it like to be a Translator?
A regular Translator is tasked with translating documents from one language or dialect to another. Some Translators, like those who work with diplomats or public officials, must translate on the spot with the help of shorthand writing. A Translator can also work in a corporate environment, where he or she produces transcribed documents, or in the legal field, which requires translated legal documents to be certified by select translation organisations. Translators can also work with a media studio to translate foreign films into English or Bahasa Malaysia.
Tasks and duties
- Translating documents from one language to another.
- Ensuring accuracy of wording and context in translated documents.
- Communicating with colleagues to ensure the context of translations is accurate.
- Meeting with teams and colleagues regularly.
- Researching on the topic of translations to ensure maximum accuracy.
- Meeting deadlines and output quotas.
- Taking language fluency tests regularly.
- Learning shorthand, if you are tasked with translating on the spot.
A typical day for a Translator consists of completing a list of documents that must be translated within a deadline, ensuring that translations are not only grammatically correct but also contextually accurate.
How to become a Translator
Not all Translator jobs require diplomas or degrees. Requirements will vary per company.
- Complete the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or O-Levels.
- Pursue a Diploma in Translation and Interpreting or a Bachelor of Arts in English or Linguistics. Any related fields are also acceptable. An internship at a translation agency or company translation office also helps.
- Acquire the necessary fluency certifications needed for your second language. Certification requirements will vary per language.
- Find your specialty, whether it’s in real-time translations, movie subtitle translations, legal document translations, or corporate document translations.
- Start your first job in an entry-level Translator position. Then move up the ladder to become the head of your department or even set up your own translation business.
