What's it like to be a Scaffolder?
A Scaffolder is a specialist that plans, erects and dismantles scaffolding at construction sites. This role requires familiarity with construction materials to build structures that ensure safe and durable staging areas for crews to work in sections of a construction site.
Tasks and duties
- Planning for scaffolding structure materials needed.
- Building scaffolding and inspecting its durability for safe use.
- Disassembling scaffolding for transfer to another part of the construction site.
There are several types of scaffolding such as buildings, stages, and many more. Building scaffolding includes using steel pipes, fittings, braces to create a sturdy foundation for reaching the height required to build structures. The job is physically demanding and requires careful planning for assembling and dismantling scaffolding.
How to become a Scaffolder
You do not require a formal education to become a Scaffolder. However, an apprenticeship will help you to start in this role. Some employers prefer hiring candidates with at least a high school education.
- Look for an apprenticeship to gain experience. Some construction foremen or stage directors hire apprentices interested in learning the basic skills necessary to be part of their crew. This apprenticeship could last for the duration of a project.
- Complete a scaffolding certification recognised by the Malaysian Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). While not a requirement, it would be ideal to get a professional certificate on basic scaffolding which can improve your eligibility to work as a Scaffolder.
- To be successful in this role, experience counts in creating sturdy scaffolding structures. This may be certified by a designated safety inspector or a professional engineer. Career progression in this role can lead you to becoming a Safety Inspector, Scaffolding Designer or a Foreman.
