What's it like to be a Restaurant Manager?
Restaurant Managers oversee and manage the daily operations of a restaurant. They must have excellent interpersonal skills since a large part of their job involves working with customers, suppliers, and staff. They have to be ready to tackle any problem to ensure restaurant operations run smoothly. Equally important, Restaurant Managers have to see to it that every dish coming out of the kitchen is of top quality. In the back of house, it is also a Restaurant Managers’ responsibility to ensure their staff does their job well.
Tasks and duties
- Hiring, training, and managing restaurant staff.
- Maintaining safety and food quality standards.
- Managing inventory and making sure all supply deliveries arrive on time.
- Overseeing cash flow and budgets, paying vendors, approving staff timesheets, and taking charge of the payroll process.
- Keeping diners satisfied and happy with excellent customer service.
- Monitoring business performance and reporting this to the restaurant owner.
How to become a Restaurant Manager
Restaurant Managers need to complete at least a diploma course relevant to the food industry or management. A full degree course, though, can come in handy and open up more career opportunities. Interpersonal and organisational skills can be learned on the job.
- Complete your secondary school and attain Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia.
- Complete an accredited course with focus on fundamentals of food and beverage management such as Diploma in Hospitality Management.
- Consider getting any entry-level job in a restaurant to learn all aspects of the restaurant business from the bottom.
- For further studies, there are master degrees and online courses in more specific subjects, such as accounting, human resources, leadership, business ethics, and food safety and hygiene.
