What's it like to be a Registered Nurse?
A Registered Nurse is a healthcare professional qualified to provide patient care in health and medical institutions. They are registered with the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB) to perform healthcare functions that do not require a Doctor. They attend to patients’ immediate needs and inquiries. They are expected to strictly comply with health protocols and standards. Registered Nurses work in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities.
Tasks and duties
- Performing medical procedures on patients.
- Recording patient findings and updating their records.
- Taking patient vital signs and medical samples.
- Educating patients about their health and recommending best practices.
- Collaborating with doctors to create a treatment plan for patients.
- Assisting Doctors and Surgeons with procedures and operations.
- Sanitising medical equipment and facilities in accordance with protocols.
How to become a Registered Nurse
A degree in nursing and a licence from the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB) are necessary to work as a Registered Nurse. Before university, you must have passed the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination or the International General Certificate of Secondary Education examination for foreigners. Aspiring Nurses should take biology as an elective.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in nursing from a recognised university.
Complete a nursing internship at a recognised company.
Apply to and pass the licensure examination by the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB).
Register with the Malaysian Nursing Board (MNB) to maintain your licence.
Obtain an Annual Practising Certificate (APC) from the Nursing Council.
