Several projects managed by project managers are tracked and managed by a Programme Manager. This senior leadership position ensures that the project objectives are aligned with the company's long-term goals and are executed within an assigned financial budget, including human resources and assets needed to complete programme objectives.
Tasks and duties
- Developing strategies to achieve an organisation's goal.
- Budgeting resources for several related projects.
- Creating operational project plans.
- Analysing programme risks and benefits and addressing project changes that could impact service delivery.
- Ensuring completion of the overall program objectives and providing performance reports.
- Managing communications between stakeholders and project teams.
Programme Managers are expected to understand the organisation's goals, know the resources available and plan and assign resources to several projects. Years of experience in project management, working with cross-functional teams, and knowledge in industry operations is required to be successful in this career.
How to become a Program Manager
To start a career as a Programme Manager, you are expected to have operational industry knowledge and proven experience in successfully leading several projects. A formal qualification is usually required.
- Complete a relevant bachelor degree in your field of industry.
- Obtain relevant project management certifications. Some employers prefer industry-recognised certifications in project management.
- Take postgraduate studies in a management-related course. Though not a requirement, further education can improve your employability.
- Show proven experience in managing resources and communicating effectively with different levels in an organisation. These leadership skills can help you perform better as a Programme Manager and open pathways to more senior roles.
