What's it like to be a Paralegal?
Paralegals help put together a case and legal files for a Lawyer to use. They are in charge of creating affidavits and other legal documents, as well as coordinating information between a Lawyer and people involved in a case.
Tasks and duties
- Keeping correspondence with an attorney’s clients and witnesses.
- Researching a case and evidence.
- Carrying out investigations and evidence collection.
- Documenting testimonies and interrogations.
- Creating legal documents.
- Attending court proceedings.
How to become a Paralegal
A combination of education and practical experience is required to become a Paralegal.
- Complete a bachelor degree in legal studies or a related course.
- Take a paralegal associate degree or certificate.
- Get an internship at a law firm to build experience.
- Work at least two years as a litigation clerk/secretary in a law firm.
- Choose a specialty. Paralegals can specialise in litigation, labour law, government and other fields.
