What's it like to be a Metallurgist?
Metallurgists can work in several areas, including civil engineering, aircraft manufacture and automotive engineering. Metallurgists may also find themselves usually teamed up with engineers, chemists and other materials scientists.
Tasks and duties
- Meeting with clients and liaising with engineers and scientists on timelines and feasibility.
- Providing advice on the suitability of metals, based on different purposes.
- Recommending and advising product feasibility.
- Conducting product research.
- Ensuring compliance and adherence to quality standards in manufacturing.
- Crafting and shaping precise designs for components.
- Providing innovative solutions to problems.
- Overseeing operational quality control processes.
Metallurgists may also specialise in one of three areas: Chemical Metallurgists, who focus on the extraction of metals, Physical Metallurgists, who study how a metal behaves in different conditions, and investigate signs of weakness, and Process Metallurgists, who design metal parts and are responsible for shaping metal parts through methods such as casting, and joining metal parts through welding and soldering.
How to become a Metallurgist
Metallurgists usually need a bachelor degree in metallurgy, or other related fields such as material science or engineering.
- Pass the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (Malaysian Certificate of Education) or the STPM.
- Complete a bachelor degree in metallurgy, or a related discipline such as chemical engineering, metallurgical engineering, or material science.
- Undertake onsite training to get experience in both extracting metals and manipulating them.
- To further your career, you may take engineering courses that best suit your interests to complement your knowledge in metallurgy.
