What's it like to be a Chemical Engineer?
Working to solve problems and improve people’s lives, Chemical Engineers can explore opportunities across various fields. However, they are mostly likely involved in energy, food processing, microelectronics, biotechnology, polymers, textiles, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, safety and environmental health industries. Chemical Engineers carry out product development, plant design, and risk analysis. They develop more efficient and sustainable designs and operations of plants and machinery. They also research and create new or adapted substances and materials to make everyday lives better, easier and more sustainable.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting technological research to develop chemical processes and new materials.
- Establishing protocols to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Testing and monitoring chemical processes.
- Troubleshooting problems in the manufacturing process.
- Ensuring processes and equipment comply with regulations.
- Preparing cost estimates for management.
- Keeping the laboratory clean.
Frequently working in laboratories, Chemical Engineers need technical skills to handle equipment and materials. They also need analytical and decision-making skills because their role involves studying data and presenting solutions to problems.
How to become a Chemical Engineer
Chemical Engineers need at least a bachelor degree. On top of this, some jobs may also require a Professional Engineering License.
- Complete a bachelor degree in chemical engineering. This is a four-year program that includes compulsory industrial training for a minimum of two months. The Engineering Accreditation Council Malaysia does not accredit programs with only three years of study.
- Register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) as a Graduate Engineer. You need this certification to practise chemical engineering in Malaysia. If you studied chemical engineering overseas, you can register for a Graduate Engineer certification as long as you hold a Washington Accord-accredited degree.
- Obtain a Professional Engineering License if required. A common pathway to becoming licensed is three years of practical training followed by an exam.
