They are responsible for monitoring and improving the progress of the company’s information systems. IT Managers usually have several years of experience in the field, and can work in a variety of industries that rely on digital infrastructure.
Tasks and duties
- Managing the operations of an information technology department.
- Hiring, training, evaluating and improving the performance of IT employees.
- Assessing information systems and recommending optimisations.
- Supervising computer hardware maintenance and upgrades.
- Drafting budgets for hardware repair and upgrades.
- Preparing data backup and conducting risk management for software.
- Reporting the performance of the IT department and equipment to senior staff.
How to become an IT Manager
- Complete a bachelor degree in information technology, information systems, computer science or a related field.
- Secure an internship to work in an IT team under the guidance of experienced professionals.
- Gain experience leading teams and processes. Management experience may be preferred by some employers.
- Consider pursuing postgraduate studies in either an IT or management-related course to gain more knowledge and improve your chances of advancing your career.
