What's it like to be a Human Resources Officer?
A Human Resources Officer works in the HR team of a company to assist the Human Resources Manager with hiring and managing employees. They create and post job ads for the company, filter through applications, and conduct the screening process for applicants. They also gather recruitment data and consult with the Human Resources Manager and other employees in charge to hire the right candidates.
Tasks and duties
- Recruiting, interviewing and hiring employees.
- Conducting payroll.
- Training employees and monitoring performance.
- Filing employee records.
- Conducting background checks and giving employee recommendations.
- Investigating employee incidents and carrying out disciplinary measures.
They are responsible for training and orienting hired candidates, implementing company rules and standards, monitoring employee progress and implementing activities for performance improvement, employee wellness, or disciplinary measures as needed.
How to become a Human Resources Officer
A bachelor degree is required for entry-level human resources positions and beyond. Strong administrative skills and previous experience in an organisation will be an advantage.
- Obtain a bachelor degree from a recognised university in a related field. This could be human resources, psychology, or business administration.
- Complete an internship. An internship leads to valuable experiences and references that will help in getting a job offer as a human resources professional.
- Apply for an entry-level job in the human resources department of a recognised company. Examples are Human Resources Clerk, Human Resources Assistant, and Human Resources Associate.
- Consider further education in human resources, like human resources certifications and postgraduate degrees.
