What's it like to be a Fashion Designer?
Fashion Designers build and design clothing and accessories. A Fashion Designer may specialise in high fashion, mass-market clothing, sports wear, ready-to-wear apparel, accessories, evening wear, or footwear. Fashion Designers make sketches, templates or mock-ups before starting a project. They also explore ideas to create stylish and up-to-date designs.
Tasks and duties
- Creating collections or fashion lines that showcase a theme or trend.
- Designing women's, men's, and children's apparel. This includes sportswear, leatherwear, formalwear and footwear.
- Examining fashion trends, sketching designs of clothing and accessories and selecting colors and fabrics.
- Supervising the work with the manufacturers and suppliers during the production stage.
- Performing technical, patternmaking and sewing tasks, in addition to designing the clothing.
How to become a Fashion Designer
There are no formal entry requirements to become a Fashion Designer. A relevant degree may be beneficial and provide you with practical skills in colour theory, textile training, and design software.
- Obtain a fashion design degree programme. This will expose you to fabrics, fashion theory, and colour theory. The programme will also teach you how to create designs using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Gain hands-on experience by participating in an internship programme with a design firm, clothing manufacturer, or personal stylist. This may also help you network with other designers, suppliers and buyers in the industry.
- Build your own portfolio to show your skills and creative sensibilities.
- Update yourself on the latest trends in fashion. The fashion industry is constantly changing, so it is important that you keep yourself abreast of the trends. You can join a professional association, read fashion magazines, watch fashion shows and follow other fashion designers.
