What's it like to be an Environmental Engineer?
Environmental Engineers combine knowledge of engineering, chemistry, biology and soil science to develop projects that can help the environment. It’s the primary objective of an Environmental Engineer to create healthier living spaces. They may work to devise solutions for effective wastewater management, create systems to treat industrial waste, manage municipal water supply, and improve the overall sanitation in cities and rural locations. Environmental Engineers also design technology to provide assistance in conservation. With their expertise, Environmental Engineers can work as advisors to businessmen and policymakers whose activities may impact the environment.
Tasks and duties
- Reviewing environmental regulations and ensuring that they’re being followed.
- Assessing stormwater management operations for municipal, construction, and industrial stormwater programs.
- Conducting site evaluations.
- Using mathematics and technology to forecast future problems in the environment, and taking the initiative to provide solutions.
- Monitoring the progress of the programmes that have been set.
- Investigating human influences on the environment.
- Discerning critical research areas like renewable energy and climate change.
How to become an Environmental Engineer
It takes several years of education and experience before you can become a professional Environmental Engineer.
- Complete a bachelor degree in environmental engineering or an equivalent, like civil or commercial engineering. In an environmental engineering programme, you will learn about basic engineering principles, ecosystem processes, alternative energy technologies, principles of sustainability and computer-aided design (CAD).
- Look for internships or entry-level positions. These opportunities will give you valuable work experience and prepare you for much higher positions.
- Obtain a masters degree in environmental engineering. Some universities have five-year programmes where you can complete your bachelor’s and transition into your masters programme.
- Once you get enough work experience, consider obtaining membership at the Board of Engineers Malaysia to get more job opportunities with a higher salary.
