Butchers are professional meat cutters, with additional tasks varying depending on their work environment. In retail settings, Butchers need to be approachable and ready to help customers select the right meats for their meals. They can also cut meats to the specific requirements of customers. Butchers in processing plants have a more extensive set of responsibilities. Some Butchers are also tasked with slaughtering animals. In this case, Butchers may utilise special equipment to grind, break and trim meats.

- Cutting meats to required specifications.
- Understanding and practising good hygiene and adhering to food safety and sanitary regulations.
- Cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment used.
- Weighing, pricing and packaging products.
- Coordinating with the suppliers and deliveries or order pickups.
- Making quality inspections on meats and other products and keeping track of the inventory.
How to become a Butcher
Whether in retail or processing plants, most Butchers learn their skills through apprenticeships or on-the-job training. Some culinary schools offer butchering courses, while others facilitate internships paired with classroom training.
- Complete a secondary school certificate or the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia). While you can become a Butcher even without this, some apprenticeship programs prefer applicants with high school diplomas.
- Look for places that offer butcher training. Take up courses to learn basic cutting, trimming and deboning skills.
- Apply for an apprenticeship. While you can learn primary skills through butcher training, apprenticeship programs will give you valuable experience as a meat cutter. During this, a professional Butcher will also mentor you and further expand your knowledge in butchery. Grocery stores and butcher’s shops typically offer apprenticeships.
- After enough experience as a Butcher, you can open your own shop after acquiring a Malaysian Halal Certificate.
