What's it like to be a Baker?
Bakers make and create recipes for bread, cakes and pastry items. They measure ingredients, monitor baking times, follow recipes and maintain inventory. Bakers typically start work early to prepare baked goods for the day and must have enough stamina to stand on their feet and work with their hands all day long.

How to become a Baker
Baking is a profession where experience counts more than anything. If you’re an aspiring Baker, you can gain experience by practising on your own, using researched recipes. While certifications are not necessary to become a baker, you can sign up for baking classes or even culinary school to learn technical skills. Malaysia has a wide selection of training options, from weekend baking lessons to pastry diplomas.
- Complete secondary education. Baking is a practical skill so general knowledge, particularly in math and science, is essential.
- Take a course in baking and pastry. A professional culinary school can expose you to better baking techniques, nutritional information, and sanitation regulations.
- Obtain on-the-job learning. You can gain some real baking experience by working as an apprentice or trainee in a baking establishment. Not only can it serve as a stepping stone in the industry, but it can also expand your professional network.
- Find a specialty. The field features several niches. Some Bakers specialise in bread while others are experts at 10-tiered novelty cakes. Each baked good requires different techniques. Any baker should be familiar with all of them, but it would be more useful and practical to master one or two.
- Plan a career path. With several years of experience, you could work as a head Pastry Chef, open a business and sell artisan cakes and cookies, or lead a commissary kitchen, creating baked goods for cafes and restaurants.
