What's it like to be an Architect?
Architects create the blueprint for and manage a construction project. Some projects are designed from scratch, while others are restoration and conservation projects meant for existing buildings. Architects work on different types of structures, like skyscrapers, condominiums, houses, and schools. An Architect must have a comprehensive skill set that includes drawing, mathematics, project management, model making, data analysis, and safety knowledge, among many others. They are expected to be qualified to give both aesthetic and technical advice on projects.
Tasks and duties
- Envisioning and drawing designs using computer-aided design (CAD) applications.
- Keeping up to date with building codes and zoning laws.
- Conducting cost analysis, land, and environmental impact studies of a building project.
- Developing, leading and supervising construction projects onsite.
- Consulting with clients to understand building requirements.
- Securing permits for building projects.
- Conferring with construction teams about project feasibility.
How to become an Architect
To become an Architect, you need to complete a qualification that has been approved by the Board of Architects Malaysia (LAM).
- Complete a 3-year undergraduate degree in architecture, architectural design or architectural studies.
- Complete a 2-year postgraduate degree such as a Master of Architecture.
- Gain at least 2 years of practical experience in the industry and submit a Professional Experience Evaluation Report.
- To become a Professional Architect, you will need to complete and pass the LAM Part III Professional Examination for Architects.
