It is a form of goodwill and it also sets the road to parting ways on good terms. However, there are some instances in which you need to resign immediately. In this case, you will have to be careful.

While it is not the norm, it is possible to write a resignation letter with a 24-hour notice. Needless to say, leaving your job within 24 hours is not the best practice for employees. But if it is simply unavoidable, here are some things you have to keep in mind.

How to write a 24 hours resignation letter

1. Inform your manager

Before turning in a written notice, the first thing you should do is to talk to your immediate supervisor regarding your resignation. Explain why you need to resign from your job without rendering the standard two weeks notice. This is a sign that you respect your boss and value your relationship with him or her. Additionally, speaking with your boss gives you the chance to ask questions regarding separation pay and work on a turnover plan before you go.

2. Write your notice in the business letter format

A resignation letter is still considered as a type of business letter. Writing in this format shows that you are professional.

3. Briefly state your reasons and the date of effectivity

Resigning on short notice may have various but significant reasons. You might be resigning due to a family emergency. Or, you might need to take some time off to take care of your personal health. You do not have to explain your resignation in full detail. You may simply keep your resignation notice short and succinct. Most importantly, include the date your resignation takes effect.

4. Express gratitude.

Do not forget to thank your employer for the learnings and the opportunity to work with them. A small note of gratitude goes a long way.

5. Leave your contact information.

Since you are going to resign immediately, share your personal contact information so your employer can get in touch with you to ask questions they might have.

Here is a sample template that you can follow.

It may sound like it is not possible to resign immediately. But with proper communication, it is doable. Even with the short amount of time to transition out of your job, try your best to wrap things up professionally. Show respect to your employer and colleagues, and remember the transferable skills you have picked up at work.
