Kuala Lumpur, 1 December 2014 – In the present corporate world, thriving to secure a position in top companies has always been every jobseeker’s dream. Recently, JobStreet.com conducted a survey to gather information on what are the top companies Malaysian employees want to work for and why.

Malaysia’s leading international petroleum corporation, Petronas topped the list of Most Preferred Company to work in the country. Coming in second place in the survey is Shell, the world’s leading energy company, followed by Google Malaysia, while Maybank and Sime Darby claimed the fourth and fifth spot respectively.

Why Top Companies Were Chosen?

According to the survey, salary is the prime reason candidates want to work for these companies. The reason is the same across all position levels, from fresh graduates to senior managers.

Experienced candidates would opt for company reputation as their second preference when selecting a company to work for. In an interview with a former consultant from Accenture, he said that reputation plays a very important role in the achievement of business objectives. A company with a good reputation also tend to have a better image and work environment to work in, which carries more weight than salary.

A Communication Executive from Shell Business Service Centre Sdn. Bhd admitted it was the salary package and brand that made her apply for a position in the company. Soon after she joined Shell, she realised the company also emphasise a lot on training and development. Free courses are available at the Shell Online University to help develop one’s personal career growth.

Fresh graduates or jobseekers new to the workforce placed learning/training and development as their second priority. They see training as development opportunities to enhance their work skills for better prospects in the long run.

Meanwhile, benefits and incentives came in third as a workplace consideration across all position levels followed by quality of leadership. Work environment and culture were chosen as their fourth and fifth consideration respectively.

Speaking of work environment, a digital analyst from Google Malaysia enthused, “I really like being in such a dynamic environment as it brings out the best in people. Our open culture is evident in the way our office space is organised -- lots of open spaces, community areas which are furnished with games and sports that we all love, and everyone sits together without their own private cubicles. This makes for great discussion, brainstorming and exchange of experience, which is really valuable especially when you’re just starting out in your career.”

When asked what prevent current employees from seeking a new job at the company they preferred, 46 per cent said that they have no time to apply or they did not hear a reply from the company.

Why do employees dislike their current job?

Survey results showed 88 per cent of employees mentioned they would tender their resignation in their current company if they were given an opportunity to work in their preferred company.

The foremost reason is because their current company lacks leadership quality. One employee commented that managers are frequently people who have been noticed for having a high level of technical capability, but this does not always amount to having strong management skills, which resulted in lack of leadership quality.

In order to promote leadership growth, the Head of Communications and Public Affairs from Google Malaysia commented, “Very few companies have the breadth and depth of vision to be a revolutionary company, and how a company can promote leadership is to bring a culture in which everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. Companies should have office environments that encourage interactions within and across teams, and to spark conversations about work as well as play.”

Employees also chose salary as their second reason for their wanting to resign. They felt that their current company did not reward them much increment despite showing better performances and working for the same company over 2 years.  By going to a more recognised company, candidates believe that they could get greater opportunities for salary advancement.

Other dissatisfactions that caused candidates to resign from their current workplace include poor working environment and culture, lack of bonus and incentives and lack of career growth.

Note: A total of 450 employees across various industries in Malaysia participated in this survey conducted in July 2014.
