What's it like to be a Telecommunications Engineer?
Telecommunications Engineers design, test, and build the various technologies that allow people to communicate over distances. They may work in fields such as telephone and internet networks, radio and television broadcasting and satellite communications. These roles may require office or field work. They work with a variety of communication networks and equipment including copper-wire networks, fibre-optics, satellites and wireless communication technologies.
Tasks and duties
- Planning, designing, commissioning and monitoring complex telecommunication equipment and facilities and associated broadcasting equipment.
- Working closely with clients, discussing solutions like Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) to help them manage, monitor and track calls.
- Installing internal cabling and wiring for telephone systems and junction and distribution boxes.
- Fixing and connecting wires from underground or aerial lines to premises.
- Connecting cable terminals to inside wiring.
Telecommunications Engineers design telecommunication networks, decide on the technology to be used and where they need to be placed, as well as oversee installation. They may also be responsible for testing and repairing faults.
How to become a Telecommunications Engineer
Telecommunication engineering is a rapidly developing and dynamic field of engineering. Formal education is needed to work as a Telecommunications Engineer.
- Complete a bachelor degree in engineering with a major in telecommunications engineering. Make sure that the university you enrol in is accredited by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
- Undertake an internship/industrial training for a minimum period of 16 weeks to prepare yourself for a smooth transition from the classroom to the work environment.
- After receiving your degree, register with the Board of Engineers Malaysia as Graduate Engineer.
- Obtain a minimum of three years of work experience. This includes a minimum one year working experience in Malaysia.
- Take the Professional Exam Tier 1. If you pass, you can apply for Professional Engineer registration with BEM. If you wish to practice engineering, you need to obtain the Tier 2 qualifications. After passing the Professional Exam Tier 2, you can apply for Professional Engineer with Practicing Certificate (PEPC) with BEM.
