What's it like to be a Technician?
Technicians are detail-oriented individuals who monitor and diagnose problems within vehicles, equipment, and different types of machinery. They also perform troubleshooting functions, and run tests to improve existing systems. To ensure efficiency, Technicians work with other professionals, such as other Technicians, Architects, Engineers, and Contractors. They also do repairs and replace faulty equipment.
Tasks and duties
- Performing maintenance on equipment and machinery to support production and achieve desired results.
- Reviewing architectural plans and participating in their revisions.
- Assisting engineers in evaluating products, equipment, and systems.
- Providing technical support whenever necessary, such as doing calibrations for wire placement and electrical components.
- Reading repair manuals to ensure that every action taken is accurate.
- Negotiating with suppliers and liaising with clients.
- Modifying older electrical systems for cost reductions, improvement, and safety control.
- Being updated about technological developments and attending workshops.
How to become a Technician
While it may benefit you, it’s not necessary to complete a bachelor degree to work as Technician. In this career, employers tend to value those with more experience.
- Complete the SKM Level 3. This usually takes 12 months to complete and you will learn about electronic control transmission, vehicle test drive, antilock braking system (ABS) diagnostic and rectification.
- Choose the industry you want to work in and inquire about specific qualifications. Some employers may require that you complete a diploma of technical engineering.
- Look for employment opportunities and gain experience. After a minimum of three years of work experience, consider applying to become a Certified Technician at the Malaysian Board of Technologists.
