What's it like to be a Security Officer?
Considered security professionals, Security Officers move from post to post, inspecting and overseeing Security Guards, as well as assessing areas for safety risks. When they need to, they are also capable of providing training for Security Guards. They are sometimes mistaken for Security Guards, however, they perform a more mobile and managerial role.
Tasks and duties
- Managing and training a team of Security Guards.

- Keeping open communications over two-way radio with their Security Guards and local police.

- Ensuring the overall protection of all visitors and tenants in an area.
- Working as personal security of high-profile individuals.
How to become a Security Officer
Many security posts require at least a secondary-level education for their Security Officers. Good written and verbal communication skills are vital for the role. Skills in leadership, creative thinking and problem solving may provide an advantage. Further, you need to demonstrate a high level of physical fitness, honesty, and integrity.
- Graduate from secondary education. Often, certificates stating that you have passed these exams are enough for many security firms looking for Security Officers.
- Gain at least a year’s experience working as an armed guard. In line with this, you will need a firearms licence or certification to carry and use.
- Additional training in self-defence, surveillance, safety management, fire prevention, first-aid, traffic and crowd control, and accident investigations may broaden your career opportunities.
