What's it like to be a Lifeguard?
Lifeguards are also known as Lifesavers. A Lifeguard’s primary responsibility is the safety and security of swimmers. Lifeguards are expected to be focused while working to anticipate potential mishaps, accidents, or any kind of trouble before it happens. They must be quick to respond to emergencies and act on their feet should any problems or dangers arise.
Tasks and duties
- Briefing swimmers on policies, rules and regulations that ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment.
- Preventing drowning and dangerous incidents in and out of the swimming area.
- Responding to emergencies and swimmers’ injuries and administering first aid as needed.
- Inspecting the pool or beach area to ensure that it is safe for swimming and is free of debris and other potential hazards.
- Monitoring the weather and sea tide and enforcing appropriate weather-related measures and restrictions.
- Providing swimming lessons for beginners as needed.
How to become a Lifeguard
Employers typically prefer Lifeguards who have attained secondary school attainment. Aside from education, the right training is needed to pursue a career as a Lifeguard.
- 1.Attend and complete a lifeguard or lifesaver training course recognised by the International Life Saving (ILS) Federation. Many employers in Malaysia prefer a Bronze Medallion Certificate, known internationally as a Lifesaver certification.
- 2.Apply as a member of the ILS Federation. This is done by completing an ILS-recognised training course and by requesting an ILS International Certificate.
