What's it like to be an Internal Auditor?
An Internal Auditor provides an independent and objective evaluation of records found in systems and processes, and is hired directly by the company they work for. They use accepted standards to account for the quality and accuracy in processes in systems, and assess how they can be improved further.
Tasks and duties
- Performing an independent evaluation of records, systems, and processes.
- Checking and assessing internal controls of a system or processes.
- Ensuring compliance in quality and accuracy of records.
- Creating reports after performing an examination of systems.
Internal Auditors find careers in financial and non-financial sectors. They usually interact with operations and update management with their findings. Some roles also include fact-checking the business health of an organisation, providing risk assessment in executing projects, or checking for compliance on system standards.
How to become an Internal Auditor
Internal Auditors that work with financial records are expected to have a finance-related bachelor degree. For non-financial Internal Auditors, a field-related bachelor degree and experience in operations is required.
- Complete a bachelor degree in a related field. Each industry has different requirements. Having a business management degree or an industry-related degree will help with your employability as an Internal Auditor.
- Postgraduate studies and pursuing continuous studies increase your chances in gaining employment. Some non-financial industries may require updated credentials in industry standards. Financial institutions may also require certification with the latest accounting standards.
- Finance-related Internal Auditors require a licence to practice. In Malaysia, this is a requirement to be able to pursue the role. The licence can be acquired if you have five years of accumulated experience and registered as a Chartered Accountant for at least one year as a member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants.
