What's it like to be a Civil Engineer?
Civil Engineers plan and design infrastructure used in our everyday lives, including roads, water systems, bridges and airports. They analyse sites to determine whether they’re ready for construction projects and oversee development to ensure work is being conducted safely, on time and on budget. A key focus for Civil Engineers is understanding a project’s impact on the environment and incorporating sustainable design into structures.
Tasks and duties
- Analysing survey reports and other data to design new projects.
- Considering environmental hazards during the risk-analysis stage.
- Giving recommendations and updates to clients.
- Rectifying design and development problems.
- Scheduling purchases for materials and equipment.
- Evaluating the project’s sustainability and its impact on the environment.
- Overseeing soil testing to ensure the project’s feasibility.
- Ensuring that the project meets legal, health and safety standards.
How to become a Civil Engineer
To become a Civil Engineer, you need a recognised bachelor degree and industry experience.
- Complete an engineering degree recognised by the Engineering Accreditation Department, Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
- Apply for an internship while studying. This will provide you with practical experience that will put your theoretical knowledge to use in the field.
- In Malaysia, you have to register as a graduate engineer with BEM before employment.
- After three years of employment, you can apply to become a professional engineer. Complete a Professional Assessment Examination that can take up to four years: two years of general training in a firm, a year of career training for exposure in the engineering field, and a year of training under the supervision of a professional engineer.
