What's it like to be an Air Traffic Controller?
Air traffic controllers keep aircraft traffic moving safely and orderly. To fulfil this, they must carefully observe inbound and outbound aircraft. They communicate with pilots to ensure smooth airborne traffic movement before a plane lands on an airport runway. To mitigate flight delays, air traffic controllers must know what is happening both on the ground and in the air. At times, they may also manage unscheduled inbound and outbound flights. They also inform pilots on the current weather situations and assist ground crews in managing runway traffic and emergency landings.
Tasks and duties
- Keeping constant radio and radar contact with aircraft.
- Ensuring minimum distances are maintained between planes.
- Handling unexpected events, emergencies and unscheduled traffic.
- Providing weather updates and traffic information to pilots.
How to become an Air Traffic Controller
Aspiring air traffic controllers must have at least a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Malaysian Certificate of Education (MCE). Holding a diploma or degree will give you an edge in the industry. In this role, you will also need excellent communication and problem-solving skills. Air traffic controllers frequently have to make quick decisions while under pressure.
- Submit your application to an Air Navigation Service Provider to begin the initial screening process. Once accepted, you can start training as an air traffic controller.
- After passing the training, you will be qualified to apply for a licence online through Suruhanjaya Perkhidmatan Awam (SPA). Wait to be shortlisted for an interview.
- Pass the ATC Examination, English Language Proficiency (ELP) Assessment, and Class 3 Medical Assessment.
- Undergo a 66-week training course administered by the Academy of Civil Aviation Malaysia.
- Attend on-the-job training (OJT) to get a live rating for your Air Traffic Controller licence.
