Malaysia, 3 June, 2013- According to JobStreet.com’s recent survey on gender discrimination at the workplace, more than half of the employees surveyed believe such discrimination does not exist at their place of work.  The majority of both men and women surveyed did not care if their boss was male or female.Majority of respondents believe their workplace practices gender equality when it comes to delegating job assignments and salary distribution. Sixty-one per cent of respondents feel there is no salary gap among the same position level for male and female staff in their organisation. Regarding whether it’s easier to attain a promotion in their company based on gender, the general sentiment shows companies are gender neutral and do not pass over women for promotion. Many respondents believe supervisors only promote employees based on their overall good work performance, regardless of gender. When asked which gender employees prefer for a boss, the majority replied having no preference.  Of those, 67 per cent were of senior manager level, a good sign that higher level employees in Malaysia are opening up to having more equal opportunities for women within the workplace. Also, in the recent Women Deliver 2013 conference, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak was quoted saying, “Our goal is to increase the female labour participation rate to 55 per cent, and to increase the number of women working on publicly listed company boards to 30 per cent.” In addition, JobStreet.com’s survey showed 61 per cent of married women with children did not experience any discrimination during their interview with their prospective employer. The data suggests Malaysian employers today have a more open attitude towards working mothers, which is a good indicator towards boosting women in Malaysia’s labour force to 55 per cent by 2015. Ms. Chook Yuh Yng, country manager of JobStreet.com said, “Gender diversity is needed across all levels of management as different work situations call for strengths in both men and women.  By having a balanced representation of gender companies can gain a better perspective of the needs of users, customers and also stakeholders.  This will likely result in a boost in overall business performance.” A total of 806 employees, of which 63 per cent are female respondents, took part in the JobStreet.com survey conducted in May 2013.About JobStreet.comJobStreet.com ( www.jobstreet.com ) is a leading online recruitment company presently covering the employment markets in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam.
