While playing pranks on our officemates is infinitely more amusing when done in person, you can still have fun even while working remotely. In fact, nothing should stop you from bonding with your co-workers—not even the pandemic.

So, we looked high and low for pranks and shenanigans you can pull on each other amid our new normal. And, April Fools’ Day seems like the perfect day to start. After all, we all can use a good laugh these days!

Are you ready to get started?

Here are some crazy ideas in the spirit of April Fools’ Day!

Odd Man Out, Underwear’s Up

This is a work-from-home take on a classic practical joke.

  1. Choose the “it.” This can be one or two officemates.
  2. Create a group online where you exclude the “it”.
  3. Decide on your shared prank. For example, someone walks into the video app tile in just their underwear.
  4. Keep a straight face until the "It" realises what is going on.

Here is another variation.

  1. Everyone wears proper clothes on top paired with beachwear bottoms.
  2. At some point in the call, the pranksters must stand up at the same time.

Things to remember: This prank has to be coordinated, so figure out a cue or signal that everyone can agree on. This is the perfect prank for long meetings with your teammates!

Here are some real-life WFH bloopers caught on video that you can copy.

I’m Not A Cat

While this was probably not intended as a prank, we all had a good laugh when a lawyer accidentally switched on a cat filter during a serious court hearing.

You can adapt it and make it your office prank.

  1. Assign the “It.”
  2. Choose a funny filter and share it with everyone except the “It”.
  3. Determine everyone’s cue to switch on the filter during a work call.
  4. See how long it takes for the “It” to keep a straight face!

Go Classic With Well-Loved April Fools’ Day Pranks

This is for the officemates who can physically get together maybe once or twice a week in a hybrid work arrangement. Ready to time in and have some fun again?

If you have ever watchedThe Office, you might be familiar with some fun office pranks. Here are a few ideas from the sitcom you can try!

  • If your office has a vending machine, prank someone by putting their nameplate or ID inside.
  • Switch desks around. Do this to someone who has a regular space.
  • Send a prank text or email with an ominous tone that will have your officemate guessing.

Whether you are completely WFH, hybrid, or back to a physical working space, you can find ways to laugh together. Just make sure everyone is having a good time—you don’t want to end up jeopardising your career over a prank that has gone too far!
